Google Play Store Error Message “The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped”

unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped

Situation:  You pick up your phone and launch the Google Play Store to download an awesome new app, and to your frustration, it force closes before you get the chance to and are left with this little present of an error message (minus all the cool neon aqua accents that I drew in above).  Can it be fixed? Yes.  Can it be fixed without erasing the phone?  Yes again (well most likely).  “How do I do this?” you ask yourself…continue reading…

1.  Go to Settings.

2.  Then Application Manager.

3.  Make sure you are on ALL applications.

4.  Find Download Manager.  They are not all listed alphabetically.  You may have to scroll to the bottom of the app list to find this.

5.  It will probably say disabled.  Click Enable.

  • If you are still having problems after performing this step, go to  Settings > Accounts and Sync > your google account then uncheck “Sync Internet“.
  • You can also go into Settings > Application Manager > All > Play Store > Force Stop > Clear Cache > Clear Data.

Some devices may not say Application Manager, if not look for Apps or Applications.  It may be labeled differently.

If all else fails, a factory reset will fix the issue, but this is a last resort, as this erases all of the data on your phone.

        Hey,

The settings that this post have you check regarding this error message should not block you from updating any previously installed apps. It may be possible that you have updates and downloads from “unknown sources” blocked somewhere in your app settings. So, you need to make sure that the box next to “unknown sources” is checked. Of course, it depends on what phone you have to tell you where exactly to go to find this, but on most devices it will be under settings > apps or applications. You can also try restarting your phone or doing a battery pull. I hope this helps.

Hey, are you still experiencing the problem? Did you try steps 1 through 4 of this post, because that is the way to fix the issue. The steps that you wrote about are one step further, but you shouldn’t have to do them. So you most likely should NOt have to clear your app data. If so, you can email me at bombshelltech@gmail.com. I can send you some screen shots of the Note2 to help walk you through those steps. If you have to factory reset it isn’t the end of the world as you can back up 99.999% of everything on your phone. If you still need help just send me an email.

      Hi Sunil,

Are you getting any sort of error message? Or, when you launch it, does it simply closes very quickly? The fix that I have listed in THIS post above is for a specific error message. If you just can’t open your Play Store, or it it closes as soon as you launch it, you can try a couple things:

      1. Try restarting your phone. Then try to open it. If this does not work then proceed to Step #2.

      2. Try uninstalling any updates and then reinstalling them. You can do this by going to Settings>Apps or Application Manager>Highlight ALL>Google Play Store>Uninstall Updates>Install Updates. Now back out of the settings and launch the play store. If this does not work proceed to Step #3.

      3. Settings>Apps or Application Manager>Highlight ALL>Google Play Store>Force Stop>Clear Data>Clear Cache(if still highlighted after clearing data, but this should automatically be erased with the data clear). Don’t worry, you will not erase anything important. Now try going into your Play Store.

One of the above should fix the issue you are having.

      Hi Ankit,

To fix that error message, please follow the steps listed above in this post. They should also work on the Nexus 4, as it runs of of the android operating system.

A factory reset solved the problem during 2 or 3 days, but it came again 😦

      Hi,

You may have a 3rd party app that is causing it. Especially since you just did a factory reset. Did you reinstall all of your apps back on? Unfortunately finding out which one is a somewhat tedious process.

Hi Casey, and thanks for your reply.

Yes I re-installed all the previous installed applications. I agree with you: which one is the problem source? I’m trying to remove one by one, replacing it with an equivalent, but… this takes a lot of time 😦

I had the same applications on my Galaxy S2 (Android 4.1.2 stock), and I hadn’t any such error.

Looking thru the Net, I discovered that there are many other people with the same bug, and not only for the Galaxy S4, but also on an S3, on several HTC type, Xperia, etc.

        Hi Michel,

Sorry for my late response. With the holiday and all I have been pretty busy the last week or so, but I agree that looking through the apps for any “problem” ones is very time consuming. Unfortunately, I do not know what actually is causing the issue, only the fix for it. It may be something with the latest Android OS (my guess). Apparently, this is a very common issue as well, as I have seen it all over the net also. Here’s to hoping the next update will resolve it permanently!

      Hi Kathy,

To be honest, I’m not 100% sure what is causing it. I only know how to fix it. It could be something with the latest Android operating system. I have to do more research to find out the cause though. If you are experiencing this issue, you can follow the steps in the post above to help resolve it.

I found how to reproduce the bug! (on my GS4: GT-I9505)

Double click on the Home button to go to S-Voice, and ask something.
After a few minutes working on several others tasks (Internet surfing, emails reading,…), the popup appears. The only way I found to “repair”, is to clear the S-Voice cache and data.

This was a few days before. Because, now, I just tried again, and the bug doesn’t appear again!

      The popup comes again.
Clearing cache is not enough. I just cleared data and cache: Wait and see…

I disable Swype (Great, wth Dragon Speaking), but the bug came again after dictating sentences to S-Voice.

On the other end, the problem arises also on other smartphone (HTC, Xperia,…), and those don’t have S-Voice (=Samgung-Voice). So something is going wrong with the Android voice processing called by S-Voice.

      Hi Buntu,

There are a couple things that you can try and a couple of things that may be causing this problem (both hardware and software related). Did you already try a battery pull? Also, is it for both the front facing camera as well as the rear facing one? It can be a memory allocation issue, and to fix this you would need to go into Settings > Application Manager> Camera > Force Stop, Clear Data, Clear Cache. Something else that may be causing it could be an app that you recently downloaded or an app that uses your phone’s camera – for example, Skype. You can try force stopping the app or uninstalling it and seeing if this fixes the issue. Lastly, you can try downloading a different camera application, and if you are still getting the same error message, it may be hardware related at which point you will need a replacement device. Before going this route, you will want to perform a complete factory reset (remember to backup everything up before!). If the factory reset fixes it, then you know for sure that it was a software problem. If not, then you know 100% it is faulty hardware.
